Every collector has a side. Team Cute stocks binders with Pikachu, Eevee, and Mew; Team Strong chases Charizard, Mewtwo, and Rayquaza. We drew the line formally, 25 cuteness-first species against 25 battlers, and ran both camps through everything we track: recorded eBay sales, PSA registry submissions, eighteen months of daily prices, and graded market levels. The market's answer is unsentimental: STRONG wins popularity AND returns, and it wins returns with startling consistency. But cute owns something strong can't match, the single most expensive card in either camp, and the lottery-ticket right tail that produced it.
The market trades strong, barely
By raw trading volume, strong Pokémon out-trade cute ones roughly three to two, and the graded registry tells the same story (1.27 million PSA slabs versus 675 thousand across our tracked cards). But the individual leaderboard is a photo finish at the top: Charizard is the most-traded species in the hobby at 29,613 recorded sales, and Pikachu is second at 26,285, ahead of Mewtwo, Rayquaza, and everything else that breathes fire. Mew out-trades Mewtwo. The cute camp's volume is concentrated in fewer names; the strong camp is deep.

Strong pays like a portfolio; cute pays like a lottery
Over the eighteen months of daily price history we hold, the strong camp's median card returned +110% and an extraordinary 98% of them went UP, the battlers moved as one rising asset class. The cute camp's median was +71% with only 76% positive: real money, but choppier. Then look at the right tail and the story flips. Cute's 75th percentile (+185%) actually beats strong's (+176%), and the single best cute movers, a $21 Ditto that became $149, a $28 promo Pikachu that became $175, a $54 Triumphant Mew that became $331, are pure lottery physics. Strong compounds; cute occasionally detonates.

The most expensive card in either camp is cute
Strong owns the averages; cute owns the throne. On July 27, 2026 the single priciest card across both camps was Flareon Gold Star from Power Keepers at a $51,994 PSA 10 median, an Eeveelution, comfortably ahead of strong's champion, the FireRed & LeafGreen Charizard ex at $39,000. Both sat on single-digit comp counts, and both have since moved a long way: our graded tape now reads $4,652.98 on ten sales for the Flareon and holds no current PSA 10 line for the Charizard at all. This is the cute camp's structural feature: its value concentrates in emotionally-charged icons (Eeveelutions, Mew, Pikachu grails) whose demand has nothing to do with battle relevance and everything to do with attachment. Attachment is a durable bid.
The two crowns
Camps are a curated 25-species-per-side editorial split (starters' base forms count cute; final evolutions strong; Mew cute, Mewtwo strong); species matched by name token across every tracked printing. LIMITATION, disclosed on an independent recompute 2026-09-22: the two 25-name lists are an editorial judgement and this piece does not print them, so a reader cannot reproduce the split or check a species' assignment. The names it does commit to are Pikachu, Eevee, Mew, Umbreon, Flareon, Ditto and Clefairy on the cute side and Charizard, Mewtwo, Rayquaza, Gengar, Lugia and Dialga on the strong side; the other thirty-seven are unpublished. Popularity: recorded eBay sold listings (all grades, graded-skewed by construction) and PSA registry totals across our stratified 520-card graded universe, top-of-market weighted, stated counts are for tracked cards, not the entire hobby. Returns: 18 months of daily TCGplayer MARKET prices (January 2025 – July 2026), which are asks and not sold comps, with a $10 floor, ≥200 daily points, medians of 14-day windows; 139 strong cards and 68 cute ones cleared those gates, 207 in all. PSA 10 medians are recorded eBay SOLD medians and require ≥4 sales except where a smaller sample is shown explicitly (n=), so the return columns and the graded columns are different kinds of number. Every figure is a July 2026 reading: our daily card tape begins 2026-08-30 and our graded snapshot tape in late August, so none of the returns or volume counts on this page can be re-derived from our current data. Nothing here is financial advice, especially the fluffy parts.
