Every collector knows the launch pattern by feel: chase cards spike on release weekend, then bleed as supply reaches the market. Feel is not a strategy. We took every set launched in the last eighteen months, nine sets, roughly a hundred top chase cards, plus each set's total value, and measured the actual curve, day by day, normalized to each card's launch-window peak. Three findings replace the folklore: the trough is at month SEVEN, not week two; the decay is the default path that reprint announcements merely confirm; and by day 90 the market has already told you, every time in this cohort, whether a set will be a slider or a keeper.
The real curve: a slow grind to a month-seven bottom
The cohort median says a set's top chases give back 15% in the first month, about a fifth by day 90, a third by six months, and bottom out around 56% of their launch peak at a median of 224 days, seven and a half months after release. That long grind is the supply schedule made visible: launch allocation sells through in days, but print waves keep arriving for months (the print clock's restock cadence), and the bottom forms only when the era's presses move on. Then the wind-down bid starts: of the seven sets old enough to have troughed, most have recovered meaningfully from the bottom: Prismatic's chases from 56% back to 94% of launch, White Flare from 72% to 106%, Black Bolt from 84% to 128%.

Day 90 tells you which curve you're on
The dispersion between sets is enormous, and it announces itself early. Of the three sets in this cohort whose chases still held roughly their full launch value at day 90 (Destined Rivals at 1.05, Black Bolt at 1.01, Prismatic at 1.16), two are above launch today, at 1.09 and 1.28; Prismatic is the exception and still sits 6% under. Every set below 70% at day 90 (Journey Together 0.61, Mega Evolution 0.56, Phantasmal Flames 0.61, Perfect Order 0.68) stayed depressed through every later checkpoint. Total set value tells the same story: day-90 set value at or above launch preceded year-one set values of 1.15× and 1.53×; day-90 under 0.7 never got back inside our window. Prismatic is the honest caveat, and it is why the classifier is a prior rather than a law: it passed the day-90 test and STILL fell 44% mid-life, because a launch baseline set during full market mania can defeat any classifier.
Total SET value: day-90 vs a year later
| Set | Set value day 90 | Day 365 | Today | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Black Bolt | 1.01 | 1.53 | 1.53 | Keeper, flagged by day 90 |

| Prismatic Evolutions | 0.98 | 0.51 | 0.75 | Keeper w/ mania detour |
| White Flare | 0.83 | 1.23 | 1.23 | Late bloomer |
| Phantasmal Flames | 0.68 | — | 0.74 | Slider so far |

| Mega Evolution | 0.53 | — | 0.53 | Slider, flagged by day 90 |
Where each current set sits on the curve right now
Phantasmal Flames is the textbook setup: its chases sit at 53% of launch on day 256, statistically AT the cohort trough, inside the historical month-6-to-9 accumulation window, while its SEALED product simultaneously trades at 3.1× retail because the presses can't keep up. Singles at the trough with supply-constrained sealed is the divergence a reprint resolves in the buyer's favor: reprints refill packs, not the singles market's confidence. Mega Evolution at 60% on day 305 is just past its trough with the era still current. Chaos Rising at 47% on day 67 is EARLY, the curve says the next four months historically grind sideways-to-down; there is no rush. And the standing rule the curve enforces: the best sell window for launch chases is launch itself, the cohort has never paid you to hold week-one prices into month six unless day 90 already flagged a keeper.
The curve's current cast

Cohort: all nine sets released January 2025 – July 2026 (official release dates), each represented by its top 8–12 chase cards by current price with daily Near Mint market-price history from release. Each card's series is normalized to its launch-window peak (maximum of days 0–14); per-set curves are cross-card medians at weekly checkpoints; the cohort curve is the cross-set median (day-365 figures use only sets old enough, n=3). Total set value uses our daily set-value series normalized to the first-30-day peak. Younger sets' checkpoints are marked, where a set hasn't reached a checkpoint no value is shown. Day-90 classifier is descriptive of this cohort (n=7 with outcomes), with the Prismatic mania-baseline exception disclosed; it is a prior, not a guarantee. Figures as of July 28, 2026; linked pages price live. Correction, 2026-09-22, from an independent recomputation against production. Three claims did not survive. The classifier sentence read that every set holding its launch value at day 90 went on to trade at or above launch a year later, which Prismatic did not; two of the three did. The year-one range that followed a day-90 set value at or above launch was printed as 1.04x to 1.53x, which reads the Today column rather than the Day 365 column; on Day 365 it is 1.15x and 1.53x. And the list of sets below 70% at day 90 omitted Perfect Order at 0.68, which belongs there and behaves the same way. Two things this piece cannot show you at its own date. Prismatic Evolutions released January 17, 2025 and our per-card tape opens January 27, so its launch-window peak is a day-10 reading and its true launch mania is outside the series, which is the most likely reason its curve defeats the classifier. And the per-card daily histories behind every chase curve come from the provider rather than an owned table, so the checkpoint levels in both tables cannot be recomputed at July 28, 2026. Nothing here is financial advice.
