Every era of collecting elects one card to be its unit of account, the card everyone prices everything else against. This era elected Umbreon VMAX from Evolving Skies, and because it sits at the center of the market it sits at the center of every dataset we run. That makes it the perfect subject for something we have never done: a full dossier, one card read through six independent instruments.

The reading

The paradox: everything about this card should contradict

A card with 30,967 slabs and a 69.4% gem rate should not hold $4,300 in a 10. Our Population Growth Tax study shows registry growth eating premiums across the modern market, and Umbreon's registry adds about eighty slabs a week, of which roughly forty are tens. It holds anyway because demand is close to as deep as supply is fast: 36.8 VERIFIED sales a week is a floor under real turnover rather than a count of it, and it sits within a few slabs of the weekly gem intake, so the registry is being absorbed rather than stockpiled. That is what being the era's reserve currency means, and it is measurable: in our Liquidity Ledger, the only slabs faster are Mega Charizard X ex and Lugia V, both younger and cheaper.

The rip economics complete the picture. Evolving Skies boxes trade at $2,445 because of this one card, which makes its packs $67.92 lottery tickets chasing a jackpot the box price already contains. Our set simulation puts the chase-to-pack ratio at 33x, among the worst value tickets we track. Nobody should rip for this card, and the box price is the market agreeing: sealed Evolving Skies is priced as an Umbreon derivative, not as packs.

All figures from moonstone recorded data as of August 28, 2026: raw market from the daily TCGplayer sync; PSA 10 median and sample from verified eBay solds; velocity from sample-size deltas in the graded snapshot ledger; population and gem rate from the August 27 PSA registry snapshot, the latest at the time of writing; grading EV on the registry-average outcome model disclosed in our ROI study, which here is 0.6939 x $4,300 plus 0.3061 x the $2,113 PSA 9 median, less a $20 fee, against a $2,329 raw market; pack price from tracked booster-box listings. Weekly registry growth is measured across the registry snapshots from August 2 to August 27, 30,696 slabs to 30,967 and 21,342 tens to 21,485, which is 79 slabs and 41 tens a week.
