The most instructive price in vintage is not a Charizard. It is Lucky Stadium, a card Wizards handed to children for showing up to league night in the early Wizards league era, now trading at $1,284. Nothing about it was designed to be scarce. Everything about how it was distributed made it scarcer than the chase cards of its day.
Why handouts out-survived products
Products get preserved; handouts get used. A Base Set holo went into a binder in 1999; a league promo went into a deck, a bike spoke, a trash bag. The scarcity that produced is a scarcity of CONDITION rather than of slabs, and it is worth being exact about which, because our registry-depth study does not put this family in its shallow band at all: the Wizards Black Star Promos average 6,263 slabs across the nineteen cards we hold a reading above pop 100 for, with Entei alone at 22,376. What those registries have instead is the near-stall that Dark Charizard just demonstrated converts demand straight into price: Entei added 192 slabs between August 15 and September 8, 2026, and Mew 323 between August 4 and September 22, which is 1.1% and 1.2% a month against 2.7% for the registry as a whole. And the condition scarcity is real where it counts: Entei gems 4.6% of the time across those 22,376 slabs, so the PSA 9 discount on it is among the deepest we record, an $89.50 nine against a $1,150.47 ten.
The modern contrast writes itself: today's promos are handed out sleeved, graded at handout scale, and land on the deepest registry line we track, a 38,076 average in the MEP program. Read that number the way its own study insists: it is a mean over the three MEP cards carrying a pop above 100, one of which, Mega Charizard X ex, is 93% of the group total on a registry line several products share. Across all five MEP cards we hold a reading for, the mean is 22,863. Either way the direction is the point: same distribution model, opposite preservation culture, opposite asset. Scarcity was never about how many were printed. It was about how many were loved carelessly.
